Standard Life plc. is a leading savings and investment company headquartered in Scotland. In 2011, Standard Life Canada asked BlueRush to redesign and build a new mutual funds website to conform to their UK branding guides.
This project was technically complex, as the client sought to host the site internally - and their IT department presented numerous security protocols which needed to be respected.
Standard Life wanted the site library to include a “shopping cart” feature that would allow advisors, or members of the public, to create document batches for e-mailing– while maintaining protection from potential spammers.
The result for BlueRush was an incredible challenge: to build a sophisticated media and document library (the shopping cart) that would accommodate many advanced filters for hundreds of documents without the use of a hosted database or server-side technology. Furthermore, the library needed to be easy to maintain by Standard Life web integrators. All in all, the project needed to meet many client requirements, including conform to security protocols – and still had to load quickly using only the visitor’s web browser.
The solution involves an Excel media database, which is automatically normalised and minimised using VBA macros (converting the data into numeric values) that can be exported to JSON files. We used quick-timed ad hoc queries via AJAX calls and an email captcha. The result: All security requirements were respected, the tool is intuitive to use and maintain and loads exceptionally fast.
