Symantec Authentication (formally VeriSign) created the Phish-or-No Phish Challenge to educate consumers on how they can protect themselves from phishing sites. By challenging consumers to distinguish between a real website and a fraudulent one, the challenge brings more attention to phishing scams and, by doing so, seeks to reduce the number of people likely to fall victim to fraudulent sites. The microsite offers 10 side-by-side examples of Web pages that appear nearly identical and consumers must find small but important clues indicating which sites are legitimate and which are frauds. If the consumer could not find the discrepancies between the Web pages, the tutorial explains how they could have spotted the crucial signs of phishing. Additionally, Phish-or-No Phish scores can be shared to make the training available to friends and family. Symantec is currently the only vendor to offer such a valuable educational tool for phishing prevention. The Phish-or-No Phish Challenge has grown in popularity globally through the cooperation of partners and customers. As a result, VeriSign’s tool is averaging over 10,000 quiz completions a month and the microsite is now available in 13 languages in several key locales, including: Spanish, French, German, Swedish, Dutch, Norwegian, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Korean, Italian and the UK. Also, several partners and customers have proactively requested to incorporate and customize the Phish-or-No Phish Challenge in their online safety promotional efforts. Currently, there are 12 partners/customers that are using Phish-or-No Phish to educate their customers on online safety, including American Family Insurance.
