Many Americans know they need life insurance as part of their personal safety nets, but, especially in a time of financial uncertainty, concerns about cost can prevent the uninsured from taking action. As Americans rely more and more on the Internet for information, they are looking for quick online answers to the question “How much will it cost to protect my family?” Many people never discover just how affordable a policy can be because they can’t find personalized price information online. To meet this challenge, MetLife developed an interactive Term Life Instant Quote Tool in June of 2009. By answering a few simple questions, such as date of birth, gender and tobacco use, the tool provides a price quote for the life insurance term and face amount of the user’s choosing. The user then has the option of modifying the input fields to see quotes for different amounts or terms, enabling multiple quotes in minutes. The tool began as an external page linked to paid search results and online banners. Use of the tool was later expanded to include an internal version of the page, supported by a television commercial in select markets. At the beginning of 2010, a new version of the tool launched on the homepage of MetLife.com itself, giving every visitor to our site a quick way to get a price quote for term life insurance. Through January 18, 2010, all versions of the tool have seen a combined 222,000+ visits and generated 11,600+ leads.
