The Network World iDemand desktop application is a cutting-edge online magazine publishing application to provide users online subscription access to a digital edition of Network World magazine, as well as other Network World publications. Alerts on new content and access to mixed media (video, audio, text) were required as part of the project. Network World is making their publication available online, but only to registered subscribers. The iDemand communicator securely delivers a digital copy of the magazine, along with selectable rich media content channels. The application’s primary functionality automatically downloads a custom-built PDF version of the publication in the background only to current subscribed users. The download generates BPA auditable subscription file, which allows Network World to count digital downloads in its subscription numbers. Performance highlights: • More than 29,000 of those users that downloaded the widget continue to use it • Overall circulation rose about 7% • Subscription renewals are nearly twice as high with iDemand subscribers than print subscribers • 17,000 of the widget users – those that match their demographic for the advertising base – are included in the magazine’s BPA audit • Eliminating paper delivery for those 17,000 subscribers also saves the company “hundreds of thousands of dollars” per year in printing costs, says Gallagher. • Users view content in the widget 12-15 times per month compared to website visitors who typically come to the site 3 times per month.
