This site was designed for the Maryland State Police to create an efficient, easy-to-access method of delivering firearms safety training information to Maryland citizens, who wish to become gun owners. This online program replaced traditional classroom settings, and eliminated the cost of holding those classes. The start-to-finish solution was an online tool that provides video, interactive exercises and Flash-based animations. While the site needed to be rich and engaging, it also needed to be easy to use and meet accessibility standards for users with disabilities (Section 508 compliance). As a result, two versions of the site were created, (1.) an interactive, high bandwidth version and (2.) a Section 508 friendly, all HTML, low bandwidth version.
For the purposes of this award entry, we have simplified the program by removing the registration process and the ability to choose or toggle between the Flash and HTML versions.
The interactive program guides the user through lessons while smart programming prevents the user from being able to skip through the presentation. This sample site will allow you to immediately view all sections. In the live version, a user may toggle from the high to low bandwidth version without losing their place in the program.
