Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a rare and debilitating inherited blood disease that primarily affects people of Black or African American descent. Because it is a highly stigmatized disease, patients often do not receive the medical care they need. As a result, caregivers step in to advocate for their loved ones and ensure they get the proper treatment and attention. The enormous role caregivers play in their loved one’s SCD journey is undeniable. But it can lead to them to sacrifice their own self-care. By creating the Walking with Warriors website, we’ve established an important online destination dedicated to these caregivers. The site highlights the personal stories of seven amazing caregivers. In these stories, they share their experience caring for someone with SCD, describe different ways they’ve navigated difficult situations, and explain what steps they take to care for themselves during challenging times. The culmination is an incredibly authentic look into these caregivers' lives and the extraordinary role they play. The site also features a resource hub that contains a range of information and tools, specifically for caregivers. It covers essential topics such as self-care, supporting your SCD warrior as they transition from pediatric to adult care, and more. With these personal stories and resources gathered in one place, Walking with Warriors fills a critical gap in caregiver support and provides them with the information and community they need to thrive in their role.
